Hammad’s first entry as an experimental filmmaker into the Saudi art scene made waves in the Young Saudi Artists group show at ATHR gallery in 2019. The premise of the show, “In the Mist Of It All.” Asked participating artists to explain where they fit  in the broader narrative of Saudi’s evolution with all the changes that are happening with the Vision 2030 initiative.

The film serves as a voyeuristic and introspective examination of my immigration from Saudi Arabia prior to Vision 2030 and returning during the socio-economic change. Through a collage of footage from my travels and living abroad and lifetime photos of my family narrated by voice messages from my mother, the film is an immersive audio-visual experience that demonstrates the strong cultural roots that latch onto the immigrating Saudi traveler wherever he may go.

It’s a film about the various generations of Saudi and how they cope in these fast changing times in the country’s history. It’s about identity crises. Nostalgia. Patriotism. Culture. Religion. Family. Love. Loss. Fitting In. Taboo. And a love story from mother to son.
